A community-driven plan for the future of Dedham's public buildings

Dedham is creating its first-ever plan for all town-owned buildings, including schools, libraries, Town offices, and public safety facilities. This plan is called the Facilities Master Plan (FMP).

The Facilities Master Plan is a joint initiative of the Select Board and School Committee. Working with a professional consultant, the project will assess every Town-owned building for structural condition, space use, accessibility, energy efficiency, and long-term maintenance needs. The result will be a set of clear, community-aligned, and financially responsible recommendations for the future of Dedham's public facilities.

This is the first plan of its kind in Dedham's history, and it's happening because residents asked for it. Community feedback made clear that a coordinated, Townwide approach to facilities planning was needed, and this project delivers exactly that.

Who's Leading This Effort?

The Facilities Master Plan Steering Committee brings together representatives from across Town government, Dedham Public Schools, and the community to guide this effort. Members include representatives from the Select Board, School Committee, Finance & Warrant Committee, Planning Board, Library Trustees, Parks & Recreation, and two community members-at-large, supported by the Town Manager, Superintendent of Schools, and key department heads. The FMP Steering Committee will help to guide the final report to the Select Board and School Committee for final approval.

Communication Goals - Our Commitment to YouGraphic titled "Our Communication Goals" showing three colored panels: 1. Inform – Keep you informed, 2. Engage – Welcome you in, 3. Empower – Help you spread the word. The Dedham town seal appears in the background.

Our Communication Goals

Every update, meeting, and conversation throughout this project is guided by three simple goals:

1. Inform - Keep you informed We'll share clear, concise updates at every stage, so you always know where things stand and what's coming next.

2. Engage - Welcome you in When you're in the loop, you can take part. We'll make it easy to show up, ask questions, and share what matters to you.

3. Empower - Help you spread the word The more people who understand this project, the better. We'll give you the tools to share it with your neighbors and community.

Your Voice Matters!

The decisions made through this plan will shape Dedham's public buildings for decades. We're committed to keeping this process open and easy to follow, whether you want to stay informed from a distance or get actively involved. Here's how to stay connected:

  • Email updates: dedham-ma.gov/subscribe and select "Facilities Master Plan" from list of topics
  • Social media: Follow the Town of Dedham on Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, and Nextdoor
  • Bookmark this page for news and updates throughout the process

Discussions centered around the two projects and finding ways to ensure both project teams are informed of ongoing work while working to keep the community informed of all efforts, including:

This comprehensive, joint effort comes in response to community feedback asking for a coordinated approach to evaluating and planning for all municipal and school facilities across Dedham and the final plans will be the first of its kind in this community.

The FMP project is being guided by a Steering Committee designed to work closely with the chosen consultant to facilitate a series of public engagement events, and to help ensure that local priorities and community sentiment are woven into every aspect of our future facilities plans. Official appointments for Steering Committee representatives have been confirmed over the last month and are listed below and on the Town’s website. The first meeting for the group will include votes to appoint a Chair and Vice Chair to lead the committee, review the Guidance Document that defines the committee’s role, and review upcoming timelines and next steps for the project, including the review of RFP submitted and the selection of a project consultant.
